59 pupils of the Government college in Buni Yadi were killed by Boko Haram militants. The next Sunday, March 2nd was a thanksgiving service. I was the Lead pastor at the time at RCCG, Jubilee Christian Centre in Surulere, Lagos and that Sunday, we had Rev. Christie Bature as guest minister.
At Jubilee, our thanksgiving services rock. That Sunday, I said to the congregation there’s not going to be any dancing. I just couldn’t imagine us dancing after 59 boys have been slaughtered a few days prior. Some of the people didn’t get the point and were angry and sad at my decision. Frankly, I could care less. I think we cancelled another thanksgiving dancing afterwards because of a similar incidence.
You see, we can’t keep dancing over graves. What was far away that we thought was no business of ours has drawn close.
We must mourn with those who mourn. That’s in the Bible. But I know, some people don’t mourn. That’s a very twisted gospel and that’s why we keep breeding millions of people who have no empathy and saints who are so self centred.
It’s not enough to say our thoughts and prayers are with them. We ourselves know that’s just lip service. And I’m just putting that mildly.
It’s time to revisit the gospel we propagate. It’s time to revisit the prayers we pray. It’s time for the church to unite and stop undermining each other. It’s okay to temporarily stop the show and shine the light on the impending storm. If we don’t, soon there might not be a show.
